Ah Yes, forgot this bit, it should really be at the top!
The point of this blog is a place where I can deposit infomation and perhaps the odd photo on my forthcoming caving trip to Papua New Guinea, (actually New Britain). I'm off on the 4th of Feburary for 2 months and it really should be quite exciting.
The expedition is being led by Jean-Paul Sounier who is the expert on caves in the Nakanai Mountains. The whole point of the expedition is to visit the Muruk Hul, currently the deepest cave in the Southern Hemisphere (1,128 metres) and join it to other caves, achieveing a new depth record. The connection will be by diving from another cave upstream. I'm not a diver myself, but we have some pretty good ones with us, so should have every chance of success.
I'm hoping to update this from base camp in the rainforest by sat phone, but this may or may not actually happen, so dont get dissapointed if there are no, few or irregular posts.
More background to follow shortly!

Preparation
Well only 4 days to go until the off, and still many things to do. I need to pack, but before that I need to finish sewing the rucsac together. At least the hammock and tarps finished. Its had a brief testing in the park and at my parents, but have not yet spent a night in it. I'm sure it will be fine, it seemed very comfy.
I did weigh everything at the weekend and appeared to be over by several kgs. Going to have to get creative with the hand luggage. Does a pelicase count as a briefcase? In my mind it does!
